President Obama talking about gun owners: "You hear some of these folks: ‘I need a gun to protect myself from the government. We can’t do background checks because the government’s going to come take my guns away.’ The government’s us."

The President implies that tyranny only comes from FOREIGN governments. So whose government has been kicking in doors to seize raw milk and cheese from willing buyers and sellers? Which government routinely seizes "plants it doesn't like" in the war on drugs? Which government declares possessing more than $10,000 cash a crime worthy of forfeiture?

Which government set up Randy Weaver over a shotgun that had a barrel an 1/8 of an inch too short, (And a government agent coerced him into cutting it) and ended up murdering his family?

It makes one wonder if those German folks being sent off to concentration camps comforted themselves with thoughts of "Well, it's okay...We are the government, we elected Hitler, and he knows best".

Please, I'm not equating the President with Hitler, just using the situation to destroy the illusion of "the government is us".

George Washington had it right: "Government is not reason, it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a feaful master."

I take the president's soothing bromides to task not because I think our government is so much much worse than other government gangs, but because we in the U.S.A. are fond of deluding ourselves that "things are totally different here".

Human nature has not changed, nor does government change the nature of, and the desire for, power and control. Our founders understood that one should always be wary and inherently distrustful of people with power, and those who seek it.

This caught my eye, because the victim was in Norwalk, OH, right next door to where I grew up, Milan.
