11-21-13 MORE CUTBACKS IN STORE FOR CRATER LAKE

Nov 21, 2013 -- 9:03am

MORE CUTBACKS MAY BE IN THE FUTURE FOR OREGON'S ONLY NATIONAL PARK- CRATER LAKE. THE ONGOING EFFECTS OF SEQUESTRATION COULD MEAN THE PARK'S BUDGET WILL BE REDUCED BY HALF A MILLION DOLLARS SINCE 2012. THE NEXT ROUND OF CUTS WILL LIKELY RESULT IN THE CONTINUED CLOSURE OF OF THE LOST CREEK CAMPGROUND, ELIMINATING MOST SEAONAL POSITIONS, AHD STOPPING MOST NON-ESSENTIAL SNOWPLOWING, WHIC MEANS THE EAST RIM DRIVE WOULD BE FORST TO MELT ON ITS OWN. THERE COULD ALSO BE CUTS TO PERMANENT STAFF POSITIONS, RESULTING IN COMBINING VARIOUS JOBS. IT'S UNKNOWN IF THE ONGOING IMPASSE OVER THE FEDERAL BUDGET WILL RESULT IN ANOTHER GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN IN JANUARY- LAST SUMMER'S 16 DAY GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN RESULTED IN THE LOSS OF BETWEEN $15,000-25,000 IN PARK ENTRANCE FEES.
