12-26-13 DOWNTOWN HOUSING PROJECT STALLS

Dec 26, 2013 -- 9:03am

AN AGREEMENT BETWEEN LOCAL DEVELOPERS AND THE CITY OF MEDFORD TO BUILD A 25 UNIT HOUSING PROJECT ABOVE A PARKING LOT HAS UNRAVELED. CODE NAMED 'SKYBOX,' THE PROJECT WAS SET TO BE BUILT ABOVE A PARKING LOT ON CENTRAL AVENUE, AND INITIALLY RECEIVED AN ENTHUSIASTIC RESPONSE FROM THE MEDFORD URBAN RENEWAL AGENCY LAST SUMMER. BUT NEGOTIATIONS THAT ENDED DECEMBER 19TH HAVEN'T BEEN EXTENDED. UNDER THE ORIGINAL PLAN, THE CITY WOULD HAVE RETAINED OWNERSHIP OF THE LAND, BUT THE DEVELOPERS ASKED THE CITY TO SELL THE LAND TO THEM, WHICH SURPRISED MANY COUNCIL MEMBERS.
