6-11-13 KLAMATH TRIBES CLAIMING WATER RITES

Jun 11, 2013 -- 9:23am

SOME KLAMATH COUNTY FARMS COULD SOON BE GOING DRY, AS THE KLAMATH TRIBES EXERCISE SOME NEW WATER RIGHTS. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY, THE KLAMATH TRIBES HAVE MADE A WATER 'CALL' TO THE STATE TO ENFORCE THEIR SENIOR WATER RIGHTS. THE STATE WATERMASTER WILL BE ASKED TO SHUT OFF WATER TO USERS THAT JEOPARDIZE RIVER FLOWS, AND LAKE LEVELS. THE TRIBES RIGHT TO MAKE SUCH A CALL IS THE RESULT OF A STATE ADJUDICATION RULING... THAT GIVES WATER PRIORITY TO THOSE WITH THE OLDEST CLAIM.
