9-26-13 GMO PROTESTORS IN SALEM TODAY

Sep 26, 2013 -- 8:16am

GMO PROTESTORS  WILL CONVENE IN SALEM, OUTSIDE THE CAPITOL BUILDING TO FIGHT AGAINST A BILL THAT WOULD LIMIT LOCAL BANS ON PLANTING GENETICALLY MODIFIED SEEDS. IN A SPECIAL SESSION ON MONDAY, OREGON GOVERNOR JOHN KITZHABER SAID, HE DOESN'T EXPECT THE PROPOSED BILL (WHICH WOULD PROHIBIT LOCAL BANS ON FARMERS PLANTING GMO SEEDS), TO UPEND THE SESSION. HE ALSO SAID IT WOULDN'T BE BAD TO HAVE A STATEWIDE POLICY RATHER THAN A QUILT OF LOCAL LAWS.  ACTIVISTS WITH GMO FREE JACKSON COUNTY HAVE FOUGHT FOR A LOCAL MEASURE THAT WOULD MAKE JACKSON COUNTY EXEMPT FROM ANY SUCH GOVERNANCE. SENATE BILL 633 WOULD ESSENTIALLY DECLARE STATE REGULATION AND CONTROL OF ALL AGRICULTURAL SEED BE IT VEGETABLE, FLOWER OR NURSERY. THE PROPOSAL IS WIDELY SUPPORTED BY OREGON REPUBLICANS BUT DISPUTED BY THE STATES DEMOCRATIC PARTY.
